Solar Energy For Homes
Solar Energy For Homes - An Introduction
When you talk to business people about solar energy they are under the impression that solar energy is mostly installed in homes rather than business premises but for

When you ask the average British homeowner what the know about solar energy they start to wave their hands and tell you about wind farms, wave energy and driving cars on pig crap and general don’t have much of a clue about solar energy in the home.
In my mind the government and educational institutions should be doing far more to educate people about solar energy and how it has evolved to become a real alternative in the energy market.
Solar energy is FREE energy (apart from the installation costs) and can make a huge dent in your energy costs. Depending on the suitability of your property you may even end up with spare energy to sell back to your energy provider.
Up until a few years ago solar energy for the home wasn’t a viable option because the cost of a solar energy system outweighed any savings and in lots of cases you may have ended up out of pocket.
Times have changed however and the latest available figures suggest a break even point of about 7 to 8 years for a residential solar installation. Research also indicates that it is now possible to make return on a residential solar energy system over the life of the system which of course makes it far more attractive.
Solar Water Heaters & How They Work
A solar water heater is extremely simple. On a typical single-family residence, there will typically be one or two solar collector panels on the roof. The panels resemble skylights, and will be about 4 feet wide and 8 to 10 feet long.
The cold water supply is connected to the solar storage tank. Water to be heated circulates between the storage tank and the solar collectors. The output from the solar storage tank becomes the cold water connection to the conventional gas, electric or oil water heater. When a hot tap is opened, pre-heated water is drawn from storage into the conventional ("auxiliary") water heater. The burner or electric element turns on only if the temperature cannot be maintained by the solar heater.
Most properly designed solar water heaters will supply 70 per cent or more of all the energy needed for water heating.
Solar Electricity In The Home - How We get It
Solar PV (photovoltaic) uses the sun’s energy to create electricity to run appliances and lighting. This doesn’t mean it needs to always be sunny for the electricity to be generated, as it relies simply on daylight. This option uses solar cells, usually placed

The pros of Solar panels or tiles include: No greenhouse gases released and low carbon dioxide emissions. They are not too obtrusive as panels can go onto the roof and solar tiles can replace roof tiles and panels covering 10-15 sq m could produce about a third of an average family’s electricity – saving on standard electricity costs.
Of course if you had a larger roof area with no shading that was south facing then it is quite possible that you will actually generate more energy than you actually need - saving on all of your electricity costs and selling excess power back to the your electric provider.
TIP: Over 3,000 solar energy systems were installed in the UK in the past month. To find out if your property - residential or commercial - is suitable for a solar energy installation we recommend that you book a FREE Solar Survey or use our Enquiry Form to compare prices for a Solar Panels Installation.
